I received this over the transom, and am happy to pass it along. I know no one personally who has reached out to ABA, but I do know people who have gotten help from food-related 12 Step groups, and I could not endorse them more strongly.
Anorexics and Bulimics Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals whose primary purpose is to find and maintain sobriety in our eating practices, and to help others gain sobriety. ABA is not allied or affiliated with any other 12-step fellowship or organization. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop unhealthy eating practices that we have come to realize are progressively destroying our lives, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
In this group we discover that our insane eating, starving, exercise and purging behaviors are addictive in nature — that is, out of our own control — and that we actually use these behaviors, and the inner physical changes resulting from them, to numb our emotions and escape from ourselves.
In doing so, we also fall out of touch with others and out of step with the universe of which we are a part, and we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to be fully alive in our present time and space.
Furthermore, we learn that we are carrying out these insane eating, starving, exercise, and purging practices in obedience to a deceptive immensely powerful voice within our own minds. This is the voice of a disease that is chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal. The first action of this cunning and baffling disease is to cast us into a state of unawareness, in which we fail to recognize that we are in mortal danger when we carry out its insane commands. We learn that the payoff we receive from this disease for our obedience to its demands is nothing more than a mirage: an illusion of control over our lives and our future.
We learn that the disease’s principal weapon is overwhelming and paralyzing fear, and that it holds us in its lethal grip by inducing profound guilt and shame within us. The disease lies to us at every turn. It even convinces us that we are to blame for our own sick condition, that we freely choose to do the insane things we do, and that we are unlovable.
In this circle of healing we learn, one step and one moment at a time, to awaken to the truth about our disease, to recognize its lies, to see how it entraps us, to trust in a Higher Power who loves us unconditionally, and to turn our will and our lives over to this loving Power.
As we recover, we come to experience this Higher Power — the Spirit of life itself — at work within us, empowering us to live without any illusion of control. We also learn to truly own our lives and to take charge of ourselves in a way that had not been possible before.
Our program is deeply spiritual, but not allied with any religion. We have found it applicable to our healing journey regardless of our religious beliefs, for we know that our eating disorders are primarily mental or spiritual diseases, although they comprise a physical component. More specifically, we have
a mental obsession that compels us to restrict our food and/or to binge and purge, coupled with a physical “allergy” in our bodies that ensures we will continue restricting or bingeing and purging, once we have began.ABA Phone Meetings

A few thoughts on ABA
[This was originally posted here. I'm posting for a reader, who ran afoul of coding. — Michael]
I first heard about ABA when a sponsee of mine, (who happens to still currently live in Florida and work a very strong 90 day OA program. (OA is another unaffiliated food related 12-step fellowship) ... sent me the ABA Basic textbook... back in August of 2005. She & I actually met through OA Phone meetings. (OA has Aprox. 23 established registered phone meetings a week )-THIS WAS SO BACK IN 2007
I was so impressed & blown away with the ABA basic text. I could absolutely identify with the book.
That other person, ( she was no longer my sponsee at that time,) and I started the First ABA phone meeting about 7 months later... back around March 2006--- we simply thought of it as a recovery "tea party for two" ( That "phone conference meeting" was not registered with anyone at that time... .... The Literature and Outreach Committee/GSA of ABA, in a "Dear Friend in Recovery!" letter suggested: being well established, meeting for 3 months consistently before being called a "Meeting" and for 6 months to become a "Group"
We initially started the phone meeting-- reading to each other at 5:30am Saturday Mornings EST. That was a good time for the two of us. We were not thinking of recovery beyond our own recoveries-- one meal at a time, One day at a time.
We were both NOT acting out in our disease at the time. " Both active in service and "abstaining" in a Strong Massachusetts "90day" OA Community.... Both working a strong OA program of recovery.......We knew enough about traditions and about ourselves----- the ABA text was speaking to US. and in us wanting to honor both programs and both tradition 5...& 6 we did what we did...... started our own ABA meeting... The news traveled fast and about 3 to 5 people were showing up at 5:30am on Saturday Mornings to have an ABA meeting on the PHONE. Talk about being Hungry for recovery! A core of committed members emerged & just kept showing up.... A few times there happened to be only two on the phone line.. but that is all that was and IS needed to have a meeting.
The day & time was later moved to Monday Nights. as the group start thinking more about tapping into other parts of the country--areas with recovery and to just get folks connected .. and now it is continuing to blossom on God's time schedule..... That was my version of the birth.... I'll have to get my partner in crime/ my friend from Florida to concur, rebut or maybe polish up this rendition of the birth of..... .
Here it is Oct 2007 and I'm currently just getting this blog set up. I want to share what has worked for me.... What I have found helpful.... And that includes the message of ABA, that of HOPE & of RECOVERY....
My H.P., (which I choose to call God, God as I understand God), has never steered me the wrong. pp86-87 AA Big Book (pg 15 of 17 , of this PDF file) I got this idea to create this blog,( inspired to), so I acted on it.
If you or anyone you know could possibly find this blog/ site and / or the Phone Mtg useful please, please have them call in... check it out... or just visit the site or maybe call ABA directly for more info.... Recovery is about taking action
Go easy.
