I previously touted Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas, as one of my two rooting interests to run with Barack Obama. Though I'm reasonably confident that Obama will make a wise choice, no matter what, I was left with only one rooting interest after James Webb removed himself from consideration.
From Wikipedia:
On July 7, Webb removed himself as a possible candidate for Vice President in a statement to Time Magazine, stating ... that "under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President.”
Sebelius's most attractive point, in addition to having been elected to lead a red state in the heartland, is her experience preventing new coal-powered plants in her state. It's one thing to try to grow green industry, as Gov. Deval Patrick is, but it's another to go toe to toe with the entrenched, lobbied-up armies of demon coal. And she won.
I also think her gender is an asset in a race where disappointed Hillary fans have talked about moving to McCain or just staying home, but I think that less as the primary race recedes into the past. I have strong faith that John McCain is going to make the case against both courses, just by talking and being himself — that is, whatever self he's seeking to sell these days.
Gristmill, one of the strongest presences in the green ether of the Internet, recently published an interview with the governor, and I completed it convinced that even if she's not the VP nominee, she will have a home in the Obama administration if she wants one.
Maybe she'll be given EPA. If she is, we can be sure she won't have the carpet yanked from under her as Christie Todd Whitman experienced at the hand of Cheney.
