I suspect this isn't the last time you'll hear Oct. 24 in a conversation about global climate change. it has been designated by a worldwide consortium of activists who want to send a message to the politicians who'll gather six weeks later in Copenhagen for the final round of talks to replace the Kyoto accords as the world's declared intentions to address global climate change.
The way they want to achieve this is through an array of locally inspired and organized demonstrations of popular will that they hope will be so impressive in its outpouring that the envoys will feel pressure to reach meaningful agreements.
I got the word from Bill McKibben, the author and activist behind 350.org, which I've written about several times previously, but other organizers come from China, India, Canada, Australia, the UK, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
You can learn more, and register your action, at 350.org/oct24. I will certainly attend one of these (God willing), but perhaps I'll help organize one. if you have an idea for Greater Boston and want some help, let me know. There's an e-mail link at the top of this page.
