Hoping to meet up with my brothers and sister in belief of food addiction, I have a Google alert trolling for the term. Most of what I get is crap — spammers who put out popularly searched words so Googlers will arrive at pages they wouldn't otherwise visit.
But every once in while, there's a Jean-Patrick Millette, a Montrealer who blogs at PrimalJournal.com. Reading his most recent post, I found myself thinking repeatedly, "gee, I wish I'd said that." F'rinstance:
The problem with this is that we only partly accept to help people that have dangerous behaviours. We are good at pointing out a problematic minority (such as drug addicts because of the possible criminal ties) but we are very bad at pointing out the majority (those who have food-related problems). Why is this? Well, for one, if we were to point out the majority, you most likely would have to point out yourself too (there is a high chance that you are part of the majority). So we are probably afraid to talk. Or maybe we just refuse to admit that it is a serious problem. It’s way easier to say ”they” than say ”we”.
There are those who think that we ALL live in an addicted society, regardless of substance — consider our reliance on "more," and our reliance on material instead of spirit. At the least, I cede these people their possibility, while I continue to value "more" and lust for new or better electronics than I have.
Here's another f'rinstance:
If I had to estimate it, I would say up to ~90% of people live on processed foods (also called junk food). By definition, these people are food junkies.
Ninety percent is his estimate, not mine, but while I have pointed out the screamingly obvious "they call it J-U-N-K food," I hadn't made the also-fairly-obvious leap that people who rely on junk food are food junkies.
I don't want to quote the entire post, and I don't agree with his every assertion. But when he says, "I hope this message travels enough to make a positive change in our society," (another facet that connects us), I'm delighted to help.
