It only works if you get involved

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I'd meant to mention this point regularly, but was inspired to act this morning while on the jogging track, listening to one of my heros, Cory Doctorow. His money quote was, "it only works if you get involved."

I'm completely down with that sentiment, in any arena. Many people complain about many things — I complain about the influence of Big Food, and the corruption of nutritional guidance as embodied by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, for example — but not enough of us move beyond the tsk-tsk to take action. Big Anything has Big Power, but almost never can it defeat the will of the people if the people will only express it. So what if that's a cliche; it's frickin' true.

To me, the most important issue facing all Americans is political corruption, not the ever-so-quaint cash stacks stashed in the freezer, but the legalized buying off of political candidates that gives wholly disproportionate voice to wealthy and corporate interests. Those with the money get their priorities through Congress in a way that should revolt any individual not tied to those interests.

As has been pointed out by Larry Lessig, before he was apparently chastened by the reaction, this is the issue that should unite all of us, whether Tea Partier or Occupier, because we're getting screwed in equal measures.

I believe in Rootstrikers.org as a a leader in this effort. I've given them cash, followed their campaigns, and tried to spread their ideas.

I'm willing to work with anyone who wants to end this corruption, and willing to fight out all our disagreements, once the playing field is leveled.

How about you? It only works if you get involved.
