Island claims sustainability milestone

Tourism officials on Bonaire say it will be the first totally sustainable island in the Caribbean. This is dubious, at best, of course.

The claim, bubblingly reported on Inhabitat, refers only to energy generation, which falls fart short of true sustainability. For starters, we're talking about a Caribbean island — how are people getting there?

They say that part of their motivation is to attract environmentally minded travelers, but really, they're going for a subset of that cohort — people who think that way, but not too thoroughly.

And, not only do the tourists have to be transported in, but so does practically every other consumable.

Any society that chooses to be carbon neutral is doing a great thing, but 100 percent sustainable, they're not.
