I can't imagine why a single reader would care what I think about local Boston sports radio, but hey, I've had these thoughts for a while, and I've got a forum, so what the hey. Please feel free to skip right over it.
I've always found the WEEI morning guys, Dennis and Callahan, to be assholes. Mean, smug, narrow-minded. Real assholes. But if I wanted anything near sports discussion in the car in the morning, I was stuck with them. Usually, I would bail after a few minutes, when I couldn't take their half-truth crap any longer.
So when a second sports station came on the air, of course I'd turn to them in the morning, and be predisposed to like them, or at least like them more. But lately, they're the clear winner, not just in my mind or in my taste.
Yesterday, one of their cohosts was the guy who, at Celtics media day, asked Delonte West about the rumors that he hooked up with Lebron James's mom. Honestly, I don't care about the answer. But as they said on air this morning, with refreshingly little boasting, it was THE question to be asked, even though no beat writer would ever have asked it.
Gary Washburn's story for the Globe this morning acknowledged as much by making it the lede of his story. He only identified the questioner as someone from a local radio station. But the questioner was Rich Shertenlieb, half of the Toucher and Rich morning duo. Props are due.
PS: "The Sports Hub" was a bad choice for a name. Spoken, it sounds like "Sports Sub," which is not how one wants to be positioned in sports. Reminds me of how, for a day, the New England Patriots were officially the "Bay State Patriots." Right up until the Globe's headline announced them as the BS Patriots.
