Miscellaneous green strategies

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

This is another in a series of posts about the actions we're taking — or not yet taking — to lessen our footprint on earth.

A lot of our lighting is with CFLs. We can't use them in the kitchen ceiling because they're not compatible to the fixtures, and we're in the same situation in the downstairs bathroom. But where we can, we do. A question I've asked before: What to do with all the old bulbs?

Unless it's something formal, everything we run through our printer has unrelated printing on the other side. I loaded up on the paper that was left at the printer before I left the Globe, and I'm still working through that pile.

We do most of our laundry in cold water.

We have electronic thermostats that are set to barely comfortable levels. If we're too cold or too hot, depending on the season, we have to think about what to do. Put on, or take off, a layer, or change the thermostat? But all the times we're not around, we're using less. We also have settings for when we're away.

We use cloth bags at the market most of the time. Sometimes, we still forget — mostly, we forget to get the bags back into the car after bringing our purchases into the house.

We have organic lawn care. No pesticides or petrochemicals. I mow with a push-mower. To be frank, neither of these are perfect solutions — we have a weedier lawn than I would like, and if I don't mow regularly, the mower struggles with higher grass. Still, we have no plans to change our practices.

We compost. A rotary composter came with the house, but we found that we'd fill it up before it was done cooking. So now we have a second unit, and have reduced our curb trash volume substantially.

This is a partial list; I want to save some for the next time.
